In recent years, the needs of enterprise network have become diverse and unpredictable, providing comprehensive empowerment for production, office work, research, and sales, while also enabling business scalability.
In the current technological landscape, there are many common technical solutions for medium to large enterprises, each with its own irreplaceable characteristics. These solutions can be roughly categorized into three types:
Composite Technical Solutions: SD-WAN, Internet VPN, suitable for multiple application scenarios for connectivity and access.
Performance-oriented Technical Solutions: MPLS VPN, dedicated lines, suitable for data center and cloud interconnection scenarios.
Flexibility-oriented Technical Solutions: Internet and VPN, SD-WAN, suitable for branch connections, SaaS access, and cloud access scenarios.
However, do all access scenarios for enterprises require additional spending on deploying connectivity channels? The answer is not necessarily! This depends on the specific business needs of the enterprise and its existing network architecture, such as:
SaaS Application Access: For enterprise public internet resources or SaaS applications, existing internet access may suffice without the need for additional dedicated connectivity channels, except for cases where acceleration is required.
Remote Office Access: Employees can work remotely through VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) or remote desktop technologies, without necessarily requiring additional connectivity channels. However, if there are higher security or flexibility requirements, SD-WAN can be used, which generally comes with encryption and tunneling technologies.
Cloud Service Access: Specifically referring to cloud portal consoles, access can be directly through the internet to log in to cloud portals without necessarily requiring additional connectivity channels. For high-security requirements, SD-WAN or MPLS VPN can be chosen. The cloud backend is crucial for business production, so it’s advisable to use high-security connectivity channels.
Data Center or Cloud Interconnection: Data centers and multi-cloud environments require high performance and stability, thus necessitating dedicated connections (MPLS VPN, dedicated lines). If conditions allow, SD-WAN network backup can be chosen.
External Partnerships: This may include two scenarios. In application access scenarios, authentication and authorization are the main concerns, usually via internet access, with portals having built-in security modules, eliminating the need to establish dedicated connections with each partner. In connectivity scenarios, for high-security or high-performance data transmission businesses, SD-WAN or MPLS VPN can be adopted.
IoT Device Connectivity: For large-scale IoT device connections, undoubtedly, 4G and 5G are used as connectivity channels. In exceptional cases, such as when devices in remote areas need stability improvements, acceleration capabilities, and centralized terminal network management, a combination of 4G/5G with SD-WAN needs to be considered.
Applying different enterprise network solutions appropriately will help achieve cost reduction, efficiency improvement, and increased competitiveness, while adapting to ever-changing business requirements. Therefore, enterprises need to make scientifically based decisions according to business needs and existing network architectures to drive sustainable business growth.
